I tested two dongles with a Linux laptop (Debian 8) and Raspberry Pi 3 (Raspbian Wheezy). At first, it didn't activate because the proprietary firmware wasn't included in my Linux distribution. I downloaded the driver package for Linux from Alfa's website (alfa dot com dot tw - sorry, but EBay is obstructing linking from a review). You don't need to actually compile the driver, just find the 'rt2870'.bin file and with root privileges, copy it to '/lib/firmware'). That should do, at least it worked for me. In my test, I got about twice the range compared to my laptop's built-in WiFi adapter and the Raspberry Pi official WiFi dongle. Since I can further improve on this with directional antennas, I am happy with the result.
On Raspberry Pi, this dongle will also enter AP mode, which is handy if one builds robots and similar devices. Not for the average user - disappointing The hardware might be quite good.

The software (drivers) is REALLY BADLY SUPPORTED: - latest OSX version is 10.10 from 2014 (now we're at 10.11) - linux latest version is from 2012 (although I have read that drivers are included in some distros) - drivers websites include: wwwalfacomtw sourceforgenet/projects/alfanetwork wwwmediatekcom/en/downloads1/downloads. you got to search and figure out their classification to find the latest version. Not User Friendly. I'm currently using it in win7 and latest driver is dated 2016, and works well. Interface is unusual but user friendly once you figure at some key points. But if you are looking for a multi OS supported USB nic, like I did, this might not be the one.
My fault, I did not investigate drivers support adequately. Awesome wifi adapter I already had built in wifi on my raspberry pi3 but had to get one of these for some Kali Linux fun. I want to verify that it works great for airecrack-ng. Also it makes a great addition to the raspberry pi 3 anyways because it provides a much greater wifi connection than the built in wifi.
It doubled the wifi strength from using it in the upstairs of my house not to mention I was discovering networks around me that I couldn't before. I highly recommend this adapter. I have learned how to make my network more secure as well as spreading the knowledge to my neighbors so they don't get hacked. This device is far out! Wonderful, considerably mid-range(when stacked against others) adapter for Linux. Fired up right out of the box with both Kali & Ubuntu(newest LTS and it’s predecessor). No issues at all.
Will operate in place of or alongside most built-in WiFi. This is a lightweight USB module with antenna attached but I would strongly recommend a clip/mount if intending to use with a higher gain/heavier antenna purchased elsewhere. As a note, the included antenna is plenty sufficient for Kali to make it’s use of.
